Founded in 2005, Kilmacthomas Badminton Club has grown from a small country club with a dozen members, to one of the largest badminton clubs in Munster. The club is based in the Rainbow Hall in Kilmacthomas. This season we have 8 teams competing in the Waterford Badminton Association mens’ and ladies’ leagues and nearly 90 juveniles playing on a weekly basis. We will also be competing in Cup and Mixed League competitions throughout the year. When starting up the club we received valuable assistance from Badminton Ireland through Brenda Barry and Wayne Doyle. Waterford Sports Partnership then came on board to offer advice and to provide valuable funding to allow us to attend coach training sessions. Kilmacthomas Badminton Club hosts the Kiersey Cup every year. This is an open mixed doubles tournament which attracts a huge entry every year with players ranging from novice to grade 1’s.
2017 has been a particularly successful year for the club with our Grade E and Grade G mixed teams winning Munster team titles and going on to play in the All-Ireland finals last May. Our Grade E team were runners-up on the day. A great day was had by all club members who attended.
The club has a very strong social committee which arranges activities from our annual quiz to open, club tournaments and Christmas awards night to annual trips to Birmingham to attend the All-England Badminton Championships. Off the court the club has enjoyed fantastic success in the Badminton Ireland Awards night held every year in Dublin. We have been named Club of the Year twice in our short existence as well as picking up some individual volunteer awards. Kilmacthomas Juvenile Badminton club has approximately 90 members who play on Wednesday and Friday nights. Most of these compete in the county championships and open competitions which take place each year.
